I was really looking forward to seeing this, as I do any Julianne Moore movie, and it seems certainly to have decent intentions, but it’s so ridiculously melodramatic (literally, a little nudge further and it could be outright comedy in places) and Moore’s performance is like a parody of a Julianne Moore performance – the silent crying that looks like laughing, the kooky ticks, the anguished expression. If it’s the first time you’ve seen her you might be impressed, but as a huge fan of hers, it’s just starting to get a little boring.
That’s the bad side, and the mood I was in for most of the movie. On the other hand, if you stick with this movie and give it your full attention, it does have some pretty heavy things to say. I’m glad I eventually gave it enough on this first viewing to get enough back out, because I’m not likely to watch it again – the issues it deals with are just way too heavy, and the soapishness of it all is a major turn-off. Spike Lee would’ve done a better job with this story, I think, but I guess if I’m honest, in the end, Joe Roth did okay.
