Far from Home

Far from Home 3 star

It’s kind of a thrill as a fan of Drew Barrymore to find this one so far down the line, ‘cos it’s really such a Drew movie. Like I’ve said of other movies of hers, mostly Conspiracy of Love and Riding in Cars with Boys, you can see definitely parallels (thematic if not specific, at least) with her tumultuous life in a lot of her work. She’s in just about every scene, she narrates, and she’s at the cutest she’d been up to that point and would be for a long time after.

I had no idea of the story before putting it on so the serial killer storyline came as quite a surprise. It has a very different tone for this kind of movie, focussing more on Drew’s character trying to make sense of the world around her than on the blood and guts being strewn about her. It’s more an adolescent character study that happens to have a lot of death in it than an out and out thriller, even taking time to get to know the horrors of the trailer trash family that lives next door to Drew and her dad more than you’d expect considering they’re really only there for a red herring and another body.

Of course, it’s also worth watching if you’re a Rent fan – though I wouldn’t have even recognised Anthony Rapp if someone hadn’t pointed it out to me, lol. Jennifer Tilly also makes a rather explosive early appearance. I’ll probably watch it again – and not necessarily just as part of a Drewfest.
