Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four 4 star

Wow – resists temptation to use the F word lol – I really loved this, and really couldn’t have had less interest in it prior to putting it on. No, it doesn’t hit the deep emotional stuff that has become the norm in superhero movies like Spider-Man etc – but neither does it really try to. It’s closer in tone to the early blockbuster action-adventure of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg – the final shot, in fact, is blatantly borrowed from the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. To say Fantastic Four doesn’t take itself too seriously is a massive understatement – sure, there are a couple of scenes with the Thing that reminded me of the best moments in Hellboy, that realisation of a normal loving person being trapped behind such a face, but even these moments are pretty quickly punctured with comedy, and I was amazed how much I laughed throughout the movie. I found the visual effects to be fantastic (sorry) but it was honestly the humour I came away from the movie thinking about – yes, even the “oops I rematerialised after taking off all my clothes” stuff with Invisible Girl (sue me, I still get a kick out of things like that lol). This is just a really fun, shockingly cleancut, movie, and I realise I’ve really put down other movies for being “just” so – but, I don’t know, I guess I was just in the mood for it this time.
