Ever After
My plan is to finally watch Riding in Cars With Boys again tomorrow as a follow-up to this but right now I really can’t decide which of the two movies – Riding or this – is the cuter Drew Barrymore movie. They’re certainly the top two, though. She’s absolutely beautiful in this movie, though, I mean really, heartbreakingly, jawdroppingly, brings tears to my eyes, beautiful, she’s like a painting.
Drew isn’t the only reason I love this movie though – the music is probably the most immediately appealing thing about it for me, George Fenton’s score is simply beautiful. I wish I could find the sheet music I used to have of the main theme, I used to love playing it. Then there’s Melanie Lynskey, as the “good” “ugly sister” (they’re neither of them ugly in this incarnation, though Lynskey is meant to be ‘chubby’, if a couple of her lines and her stereotypical love interest are anything to go by – it’s cutely done, though). She’s my personal favourite thing in the movie, I think. She really shines towards the end – “Are they always like this?” “Worse!” “Course not, mother – I’m just here for the food …” She cracks me up constantly, and I love the little moments when you see how she feels for Danielle but is so dominated that she can’t even begin to open her mouth about it.
Then there’s Richard O’Brien’s little cameo … Dougray Scott’s hilarious prince … I use the word far too much, but I guess I just love beautiful things, and this is one of those to me.
