Ella Enchanted

Ella Enchanted

Let’s cut to the worst and the apology. This movie right now sits at the bottom of my movie list of all-time. And I’m really sorry about that. What it means isn’t that I consider it the worst movie ever made, in the same way I don’t consider Pieces of April to be the greatest movie ever made despite its position at the very top of the list. Basically it means I could personally never bring myself to watch it again. It bugged the hell out of me. Hugely.

It has a great opening, and a great concept behind it. It has Minnie Driver and Anne Hathaway, for heck’s sake! It can’t be bad! But somehow, even if I’m reasonable about it… it is pretty bad. There’s certain things that work in an animated movie (clearly I’m talking about the similar Shrek and its sequel here) that just will never work in a live action movie. I guess I’m talking about the use of modern music in the medieval setting. Some anachronism is totally acceptable. I actually stood for it for most of the movie. But the final song and dance sequence that leads into the end credits honestly made me want to puke more than anything I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s the over-choreographed dance moves, like an S Club 7 video, that push it too far over the line.

Some have compared this to The Princess Bride ... I find that an insult to The Princess Bride, lol.

What’s wrong with the modern twist to a medievil setting? I actually found it interesting, and it was partly this that I liked it so much more than Disney’s Cinderella. Although “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” at the end of a wedding struck me as a bit odd, they did it quite well, so that satisfied me.

But what I didn’t know is that it really matters what the actors look like. I mean, if there was a movie with the worst setting and plot in the world, but had some really good looking person starring in it, would you go around shouting it was youre favorite movie? Of course, I’m not referring to “Ella Enchanted” here.
