This is another of Hitchcock’s silents where the story structure sort of elegantly reflects the title, but (even though The Ring didn’t appeal to me as much as it has to others) I have to say the result is far less successful. Essentially, this is about a college student who is expelled over a false accusation and then leaves home when his father believes the charge, only to fall into ever increasing troubles, until finally he returns home to find (surprise, surprise) that father has learned the truth and is waiting with open arms. I can think of very little that makes this one particularly special excepting for just how dark it gets for the main character and how old the actors are playing the students, lol. It’s hard for me to think of much else to say about it at all, except that – like The Lodger – the DVD version I had (in the same otherwise brilliant British Years box set) has an entirely mute soundtrack which may have added to my frustration at it.
