Down in the Valley
I kept telling myself during this that I was probably just not watching it under the right circumstances, that it probably needed a second viewing, all kinds of excuses that ultimately boiled down to the fact that I wanted to like it much more than I found myself liking it. Something in me should have realised that there aren’t many possible variations on the “guy falls in love with much younger girl” theme and I should’ve lowered my expectations accordingly, but with Edward Norton and Evan Rachel Wood in those roles, I hope my blindness in this regard is understandable. I wanted to end this review by saying, “it definitely needs a second viewing,” but the more I think about it, the more I’m sure it really doesn’t, and it really is just a disappointing blend of Badlands, Taxi Driver, and Thirteen, and I’d rather spend the 300 minutes on all of those than the 110 minutes of this again.
