Doppelganger [1993]
Fumbled!
I thought this would be the jewel in the crown of my Drew Barrymore triple last night, and those supercool De Palma-ish shots of her in shades at the beginning, Jan A.P. Kaczmarek’s score more than a little reminiscent even of Pino Dinaggio’s work for the greatest Hitchcock imitator of all time … it really got me a little excited.
Sadly, the tribute doesn’t last.
This falls between the last of De Palma’s great Hitchcockian homages, Raising Cain and a while before the Wachowski brothers’ sleek and sexy Bound ... and its loneliness in the cultural grand scheme of things shows – really it’s just a straight-to-video horror movie with lofty aspirations that also doubles in its own way, luckily for some, as a vehicle for Drew Barrymore. It pains me to say, though, even she’s really not required to do anything but look like Drew Barrymore here.
All this wouldn’t be so bad were it not for the ludicrous monster ending, complete with cliché false shock, which for me leaves no room for forgiveness. But I’m sure in some twisted way it got Drew where she is today, so it’s not all bad … and she is cute … doesn’t feel right seeing all those sex and shower scenes so soon after the last two, though, lol …
