Dirty Pretty Things
“Because we’re the people you don’t see. We’re the ones who drive your cars and clean your rooms and suck your cocks.”
This movie is brutal perfection, I couldn’t take my eyes off it. It begins when Okwe, a hotel concierge who we’ll soon discover is an illegal immigrant in London, discovers a human heart clogging the toilet in one of the hotel’s rooms. It’s a bizarre, albeit chilling, moment to rival Adam Sandler’s discovery of the harmonium at the beginning of Punch-Drunk Love, and the intrigue, along with the discomfort, only heightens with every minute that follows. Audrey Tautou and Chiwetel Ejiofor are superb in the leads.
Between this and last year’s Mrs. Henderson Presents, I’m beginning to feel like I really should check out Stephen Frears’ other work as director … for some reason, I haven’t seen a single one of his other films, lol.
