Clichéd, corny, and cheesy beyond belief are a few ways you could easily describe this movie, but for me, what can I say, it just hit every single button with extraordinary precision. Evan Rachel Wood and Kevin Bacon have some incredibly touching, heartbreakingly honest and raw moments both together and apart on the screen. While I called The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things the other day “a sicker and seedier Tideland,” this one, though the story is again worth comparing to Tideland, goes to a much more innocent end of the spectrum. Though it’s not without its heavier moments, the overall tone is cute and whimsical – all that cliché, corn and cheese is perfectly envisioned through the eyes of a quirky adventurous child and to me, at least, it’s just irresistible. Lawn Dogs, which was released just the year before this, also comes to mind. I’ll certainly be watching this one again.
