Derailed

Derailed 4 star

I don’t particularly like most of the “Friends” cast when they do movies (Lisa Kudrow’s about the only reliable one though I admit all six have definitely had their moments), which is probably why I started watching this with a pretty firm intention of disliking it.

The movie begins with Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston beginning their First Ever Affair (cue all the clichés that come from that – “What are we doing?” “I’ve never lied to my husband before.” “Me either.” the seedy motel, surreptitious phonecalls, eyeballs moving suspiciously, apprehensively, from side to side etc. lol) I don’t like characters like this. Why should I care about them? Why did anyone want to write about them? And it’s not the fact that they’re doing something wrong that bugs me, people screw up all the time and I get that … it’s the fact that they are so freakin’ stupid about it. These guys go one step further – they don’t even seem to be enjoying the fling. Grrrr. In this case it makes sense later on but still. Grrr. Excuse me. Walks out of the room. SHALLOW C**TS! Re-enters. Now I feel better.

BUT THEN.

Almost literally at the point I was at my most hating-the-movie stage, that’s when Vincent Cassel enters, and quelle entrance, the first of many perfect thriller moments this movie has to recommend it. To say Cassel’s performance is over-the-top is the understatement of the decade. It’s almost hilarious in places but mostly pretty damn terrifying. Hmm, that pretty much describes the movie too. I didn’t expect to find this almost as good a thriller as Flightplan. I’ll admit that I’m pretty easy pleased in this genre, but like, what am I gonna do, lie and say it sucked? :-P I’ll watch this again anytime.
