Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead 4 star

I think this viewing might have been the first time I’ve seen this movie in its original widescreen aspect ratio, uncut, etc, so it’s probably a good time to review it. I always had this movie in my mind as a real 80s home video movie, sort of cheap and tacky, nothing like Dawn at all. But while this movie doesn’t have the stunning simplicity Dawn has, it certainly has some masterful strokes. The opening, hands coming out of the wall, always makes me jump out of my skin; Sherman Howard is amazing as Bub the Zombie; the score is perfectly creepy; and Tom Savini’s gore effects are at their absolute best (do not, repeat, do not be eating meat in the last 10 minutes …)

I was about to write that the ending seriously lets it down (it’s kind of “and it was all a dream…”) – writing as I watch again, lol, sorry, bad – but even that worked for me this time around, I ‘got it’. This is way better than I remember. Hopefully a repeat viewing of Land will surprise me as much.
