Darkness

Darkness 3 star

Why do I always manage to do this, lol? Last year it was The Fog, this year it’s this movie I wish I’d saved for Halloween as originally intended. I haven’t much of a clue what this movie was about exactly, but it’s certainly beautifully made, brilliantly edited, with a chilling sound mix that even had my kitty cat on the edge of the sofa at times. Anna Paquin is sexier than ever and she barely even does anything. The movie owes a lot to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” but there are also elements of The Others, The Innocents and Japanese horror movies like The Ring and The Grudge, but it’s also all washed over with a rich European-ness which I guess comes from its largely Spanish crew – and I’m also sure this has something to do with why Paquin comes across so sexy.

It’ll take another viewing, at the least, for me to give this anything more than 3 stars for its aesthetic qualities alone – but I think I probably will find time for this again. It’s certainly different.
