Dark Water [2005]
You’ve gotta love when a movie introduces two actors like John C. Reilly and Pete Postlethwaite within seconds of each other in its first 10 minutes. In this case, in addition to the presence of Jennifer Connelly and Walter Salles at the helm, it tells you (and rightly so) that it’s going to be a lot classier than the usual J-Horror remake (it’s worth noting that Tim Roth and Dougray Scott pop up later, too).
This is mildly frightening, slickly done, perfectly watchable stuff. It doesn’t stand out much from the overcrowded genre, but I can’t think of a thing that’s wrong with it. I certainly got more out of it than the Ring or Grudge remakes, that’s for sure. The ending in particular is worth noting, a line that sort of reminded me of Silent Hill, “I’ll be your mother … forever,” and the slight smile that comes across the ‘evil’ girl … actually kind of crushed me for some reason – actually, now I think about it, those last 20 minutes or so lift the movie hugely, and I think I’ll watch the movie again for them.
