Committed

It’s impressive I managed to stay up for this movie, ‘cos it began when I was planning to go to bed but I decided to give it a chance, because I’ve always been a fan of Heather Graham and this is one of her movies I haven’t seen, and that chance extended to the full length of the movie, so that fact in itself says the movie ain’t too bad.

It’s definitely a bizarre movie that really changes course all the way through – my guess is it’s one of those screenplays that was written without having much story to begin with. Perhaps the writer-director, Lisa Krueger, had the character in mind first and went from there. I don’t know, maybe not, but it certainly felt that way to me… this movie sort of begins erratically, really asking me to turn off, not clarifying anything, not doing anything in its first 10 minutes the way most movies are supposed to, then you realise what Heather Graham is doing, and then you realise what the title means… she’s crazy, not just in love.

I’m glad I stuck the movie out because I’d hate to think I gave it half an hour or three quarters of an hour and then still had to sit through it again… I don’t mean that in a bad way, but I really don’t imagine I’ll be watching this movie again. Heather Graham is a great actress, but not in the way, say, Jodie Foster or Julianne Moore are – Heather’s done plenty of movies you really don’t need to watch again, even stuff like Drugstore Cowboy which I’ve heard is a classic in certain circles but I just basically got and shrugged at on the first viewing. Committed is definitely her movie, and is a lot better than I’d expected, but is too erratic in the end for me.
