Cold Mountain

Cold Mountain 4 star

I had very little interest in seeing this movie in the beginning and I couldn’t really think why. Nicole Kidman, who I loved in Dogville; Jude Law, who I have always loved; and Anthony Minghella, a director whose last two movies have spent a short time among my all-time favourite films. I think it’s because I loved The Talented Mr. Ripley so much more than The English Patient in the end, and I wanted more of that Minghella. But finally I got round to seeing this. It’s better than I expected, but very, very like The English Patient. RenĂ©e Zellweger adds the movie’s one must-see reason… she is a light, a hilarious, shining light in this movie. The scene that you may have already seen, the one that ends with “Let’s put it in a pot!” is one of the funniest moments in last year’s movies. I’d say she should get the Oscar, unfortunately I think she will, not that I’ll be furious; but I’ve got other plans for the little bald man.
