Clockwise

Clockwise

Seriously funny movie. I remember this used to be a regular “exeat” movie at my prep school (exeat being the rare weekend, I think twice a term, when we were allowed to go home, but foundationers, kids whose fathers had died, like me, had to stay at school and do crazy insane things like have seconds or even thirds at lunchtime, go bowling and see Beethoven at a cinema in Brighton, and spend the whole of Sunday afternoon treading water in the school swimming pool, ah good times lol), which strikes me as odd ‘cos it offers a weird perspective of the school environment in addition to having a few not-for-kids moments, lol. There was a time when I only loved John Cleese’s work in “Fawlty Towers”, but that time has passed, and now I find him 100% funny whatever he does. This is a comedy classic for me: weird electro-synth-classical score by George Fenton too.

[...] Maybe it’s ‘cos I watched the guiltiest of pleasures, “Mr. Bean”, for the first time in years just hours before flicking randomly onto this, so I was already kind of in the mood; maybe it’s ‘cos I’m sometimes just a whore for movies I’ve never heard of before – but I really loved this stupid little movie. There’s something about Hugh Laurie dancing salsa around Rio in a business suit … just makes me giggle. The score’s pretty wonderful – familiar, but wonderful – and the way Orlinda goes to bite Laurie’s finger at the airport when he gestures her to shut up … omg. There’s a priceless cameo by Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo from “Eastenders” – I know, I really shouldn’t know that, lol), too. Perhaps a bit Woman in Redish though I couldn’t say really, I’m not sure if I’ve seen all of that movie – but even for all its Clockwise -ish ridiculousness, I’d recommend it anyway. [...]
