Christmas Carol: The Movie
I’d forgotten that that was the actual ridiculous title of this animated adaptation of the Dickens classic that, let’s face it, had even at this point in time (1998), been rather overtold. Christmas Carol: The Movie – it almost ought to have an exclamation point on the end, lol. Has that movie titling convention even been used seriously since the early eighties?
Anyway, moving on … I like the live action framing of the movie, and combined with the animation style it really reminded me of The Water Babies and other older movies like that. But when it comes down to it, while I’d love to say yay for traditional animation so late in the game (especially after Twice Upon a Christmas the other day), it’s just really pretty bad. I can’t stand the motion of the characters, like their hand gestures etc make no sense at times.
All that said, I’m sure it’ll be okay for the really young children, despite it being actually pretty scary in the scary parts, it has a little silly comedy with a mouse, and it’s nice and short. Not for me, though, gimme Scrooged or the Muppet one of all the adaptations I’ve seen so far. It does deserve a whole extra star just for giving the world Kate Winslet’s song, “What If”, though, be as it may hideously awkwardly placed in the movie.
