Children of Men
I’m loathe to say this movie is too melancholy, because that’s really exactly what I wanted from it the moment I saw the first trailer. But it’s just the wrong kind of melancholy, if there is such a thing, more simply drab than interestingly depressing. The dystopian near future stuff is done brilliantly, and I can instantly recommend perfect movies to make an evening of it, Nineteen Eighty-Four of course, V for Vendetta, and 28 Days Later … which it most closely resembles. Director Alfonso Cuaron feels pretty absent from the picture, but there are some visual things, including a fantastic car scene early on and an amazing long shot later, that make his mark unmistakable. Not as great as I wanted it to be – it kinda withers downhill to its logical closure from a fantastic series of openings – but it’s still worth the look I thought it was, and the ending makes a world of difference.
