Cellular

Cellular

There’s not a lot to say about movies like this except whether they’re good or bad, and as far as I’m concerned, Cellular simply rocks. It’s been a long time since I’ve rooted for the good guys and rallied against the bad guys so passionately… I mean, it’s only a movie, right?

Sure, it’s hokey. There just happens to be a telephone in the room the kidnapped woman is placed in, just there to be broken; she just happens to be a science teacher, capable not only of fixing said phone, but of slicing a vital artery of one of her captors with a shard of broken glass. But that’s expected from a thriller. I couldn’t believe it when I heard them talking about the safety deposit box and the line came from Basinger, “I don’t know what’s inside it but if they get it then we’re all dead.” A McGuffin!

I always think it’s great when a movie can turn me so rapidly from hating it to flat-out loving it, and this movie did that. The set-up really had me thinking, “This is how I’m gonna spend the next 2 hours of my life?” Then something, I’m not sure what (I’d have to watch it again to pinpoint the moment), happened and I was just hooked. This movie’s a lot like Speed in its structure and style, and it’s just as fun a ride.
