Even though I couldn’t remember anything but that tree in the opening scenes, I’m positive I’ve seen this before and I’m sure I’ll be foolish enough to watch it again in the future. For some reason, I want this movie to be good. Paul Schrader is usually so reliable, intelligent, and all that … combined with a Giorgio Moroder score, a classic old horror movie, a sexy heroine in the form of Nastassja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell, it really shouldn’t fail. Yet I tune out literally in seconds. Even the Moroder score, I’ve gotta admit, is pretty damn dull. It annoys me so much how little this movie grabs me … but, it doesn’t, and there it is. Perhaps it’s that the whole thing isn’t even explained until an awkward piece of exposition at the 90 minute mark. This is no excuse when I’m claiming to have seen the movie before, of course, but it’s not exactly a sign of good storytelling. On the other hand, perhaps it’s just the fact that in its last quarter of an hour, it becomes embarrassingly clear that it’s just a rip-off of American Werewolf in London. Like I said, there’s something about it that tells me I’ll be watching it many times again in the future, something always makes me come back to it … there must be something here.
