Bubble Boy
Sometimes you just need a movie like this to come out of nowhere and surprise you. I’d never heard of this movie, hadn’t really planned on watching it, but the moment it began I knew I wasn’t gonna turn it off (as usual, the 90 minute runtime wasn’t exactly a turnoff either). There are elements of a lot of things here, from the obvious (*Edward Scissorhands* at the start, The Graduate at the end) to similarly themed movies like Safe etc but it has an über-quirkiness all of its own. Sometimes it’s too much for its own good, I guess, but ultimately it just goes so many places, from laugh-out loud ridiculous farce to the serious, serious sadness at the heart of its premise to just outright “huh?”-ness; and some moments (between Jimmy and his dad in the car; his instant, practically nonchalant, forgiveness of his mother when she tells him the truth) that I thought absolutely beautiful. Repeat viewings could easily make this an all-time personal fave, in fact, possibly one was enough.
