Bride of Chucky

Bride of Chucky 3 star

It’s too long since I last saw the first 3 Chucky movies, but I really loved Seed of Chucky and I figured it made sense to finally see the one that came in between (I really don’t know what took me so long). Bride forms a nice gap-filler between the fairly straight horror (if I remember correctly) of the early movies and the fairly insane comedy of the most recent.

I was surprised that the horror here is still pretty nasty in places – I don’t mean gore-wise, I just mean the general targets, the mood of it. At one point Chucky and Tiffany hi-jack a winnebago – we later see the elderly owners, bloody with permanent expressions of terror, pushed into a utility cupboard. There’s not a lot of the old-fashioned “well, the victims were kind of annoying/stupid/characterless anyway” horror movie excuses here. It’s more like Natural Born Killers, or any straight killing spree movie, really.

There is still plenty to laugh about, though. In the last half hour it picks up to the pace that the last sequel sustained. I was kind of astonished to find that the ending actually ties into Seed – I can’t believe they left fans waiting for 6 years, lol.

DVD note: very nice. Pretty funny intro by Jennifer Tilly, commentary by director, commentary by cast and crew, and a couple of behind-the-scenes featurettes, and, I believe only on the R2 edition, a hilarious skit titled “Chucky and Tiffany Do London”. These were all on the rental copy I got too … phew :)

[...] I still haven’t seen Bride of Chucky, but I have vague memories of the original three Chucky movies, not that it really matters here, since most of the backstory is either fully recapped or hinted at enough for a stranger to get by. [...]
