Breaking and Entering

Breaking and Entering 4 star

There were certainly parts of this that slipped by me but I’m sure will make more sense to me on what I can guarantee will be a second look. But even on this first look, it kept pulling me back in almost incessantly with its complexities. While Anthony Minghella’s Cold Mountain was to me a much lesser English Patient, this is only a slightly lesser (if that) Talented Mr. Ripley type of journey, all cold and beautifully dark from the character’s hearts to the architecture which is practically a character in itself. Minghella even includes my two favourite actors from those other films, Juliette Binoche (who, had I seen the movie in a more timely fashion, I would’ve been leaping to predict for another Supporting Actress Oscar last year) and Jude Law. Gabriel Yared’s score is a perfect accompaniment to the London backdrop, and though the overall mood of the movie is fairly moody (no problems there for me, lol), there are some really sweet laughs to be had too. I loved all the stuff about metaphors as well (right from the title on down – I actually cringed at the early line about “you can’t take a fish out of water” before I realised how deliberate it all was). I know for a fact I’ll get more out of this one a second time around.
