Brazil 4 star

“Put it on, big boy. I won’t look at your willy.”

LOL. Can’t believe I never noticed that one before (come on, you know I had to mention it :P)

My hope was that on this viewing this movie might finally click with me, and click with me it did. My love for Terry Gilliam has pretty much soared in years between this and the last viewing, with Tideland, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys ... and I’d always wondered why this one never really stuck in my memory.

For the first hour, the same old problems held for me. It is particularly British and particularly 80s. The production design and cast are often way too reminiscent of 80s sitcoms – from Hitchhiker’s Guide to Red Dwarf, and you even find RenĂ© Artois at the desk of the Ministry Information. At the restaurant frequented by Jonathan Pryce and his mother, I always expect to see Mr. Creosote in the background. And the story is pretty damn hodgepodge (I said the same of Hitchhiker’s Guide when I first saw it).

But like I said, this time it finally clicked. If nothing else on this viewing, it at least cements Terry Gilliam as one of my all time favourite directors, if not the absolute fave. I really look forward to watching it again, though, now knowing that I actually do like it so.
