À Bout de Souffle (Breathless)
Despite being a fan of Jean-Luc Godard, this movie has never really grabbed me despite seeing it (I think) a few times now. It feels a little too pure New Wave-ish for me, kind of like Lars Von Trier’s The Idiots was too purely Dogme ‘95 for me. I like when these directors bring the “rules” along but also stretch them a little further. I’d rather watch Godard’s Une Femme est Une Femme, or Week-End or Tout va Bien, which are all far more thoroughly wacky and musical and colourful, than this dingy twist-on-the-thriller-genre trek through Paris (and you hardly even get to see the place, either). I even enjoyed Godard’s short movie, “Charlotte et Son Jules”, included on the UK DVD, infinitely more.
