“You stupid meat.”

This is almost worth watching just for Bryan Dick, who I’d never really heard about before but, I dare say, is quite gorgeous, at least he is here Unfortunately, he departs the movie too early, and once he’s gone, it almost approaches the badness I’d been led to expect. It comes to a head with surely the worst line of the year: “Creeks … lead to rivers.” I think there must be at least 20 minutes of exposition in the last half hour.

So, it has its bad moments, but it comes from a good place, which is best discernible in the way they have the werewolf transformations take place. It’s clear here too where the budget limits lie; but it’s clear also that the film makers are trying to make something, for want of a better word, beautiful of the werewolf mythology. The transformations are streamlined, practically made of light, and despite the obvious desire for them to look better than they do, they still really worked for me; a little like the transformations in Stardust, it’s almost the lack of visual trickery that makes them work on the imagination more.

On top of that the love story is decent enough and it’s slick all the way. From what was expected (I really didn’t like Underworld), I really couldn’t be more satisfied.
