I wanted to like this movie, I wanted to love this movie. It looks beautiful. Imagination bursts from every frame. But I can’t help but think I’d like the book more. The problem with this movie is that it’s all imagination. There’s a message in the end, but overall the movie comes across as a series of ideas, never really consistent or organised. It needs a rewrite, or something, badly. But all the actors are great, particularly Albert Finney and Helena Bonham Carter, and this is definitely something to see on the big screen, because the images are beautiful if lacking a soul.
