Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon 3 star

From the fragments I picked up of this prior to viewing, this certainly sounded like an ingenius premise, and for at least its first half, I was far from let down. It opens as a documentary – a college student has gotten wind of some young guy claiming to be the next great slasher killer. All the great old names are dropped – Myers, Krueger, Voorhees – then the aspect ratio changes and we enter the “film” side of the movie that dominates over the mockumentary as time goes on. It’s hard to detail the plot beyond the fact that it’s a documentary about a serial killer that goes awry and ends with one almighty twist (even though I’m sure most viewers will see what’s coming about 15 minutes early, I still say it’s almighty). I did get a little tired of it towards the end, but then, I was just physically tired anyway. It’s certainly not technically perfect, but I do think Leslie Vernon could be the closest we’ve had to a great horror villain in a long time, and it’d be a shame if he wasn’t given a chance in a sequel or two, despite the rather closed ending this introduction has.
