Bedazzled [1967]

I’ve not seen the Brendan Fraser remake of this movie, but of the parts that I have seen, I understand it’s a far cry from this bizarre burst of surreal comedy from the sixties. I love how common and cheap everything is: Dudley Moore as a short order cook finding all the wonderful things Eleanor Bron as a waitress says in the first scenes (mostly orders for Whimpy Burgers) so utterly enchanting; his first trial wish, for a sixpence iced lolly, and Peter Cook’s method of granting it; even on the real wishes, say when Dudley Moore is a debonaire multi-millionaire, it’s always so wonderfully underwhelming. A nice way to pass some time.
