Bandidas
I thought this might’ve been a lot worse than it turned out to be – Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek basically, after a little bitch-slapping (which is funny to a point but that point is quite rapidly past), team up to be late-19th-century Robin Hoods in Mexico. Like The Transporter (and I’m guessing Taxi, too, though I haven’t seen it), Luc Besson’s influence can definitely be felt though he’s only got a minor writing and producing credit. It’s short, simple, has a few good laughs, Eric Serra’s score is incredibly catchy (thinking of Alan Silvestri’s Mexican, James Horner’s Mask of Zorro,Joe Kraemer’s Way of the Gun and Robert Rodriguez’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico rolled into one) There’s some amazing bullet-time style visual trickery towards the end, too. If this is the worst film of the year, and I hope it is, then we can all count ourselves extremely lucky.
