Bananas
I lost my first review of this so this one’s gonna be even shorter, I’m afraid. The humour’s very simple, very silly, reminded me of Steve Martin in The Jerk a lot, but also in flashes of Charlie Chaplin at his best. I was really moved by the scene in which Woody Allen’s ex-girlfriend finds herself attracted to him again when he’s supposed to be in disguise (ridiculous beard and all), and all you can see is his eyebrows moving up and down in anxiety as she tells him about her ex, himself, how much of an idiot he was etc. Then the scene that follows shatters that emotional peak with the funniest gag in the show (“Damn – I knew something was missing…”) I don’t know if I’d watch it again … but it doesn’t lessen my urge to watch the other Woody Allen movies I’ve not seen yet.
