Bad News Bears [2005]

Bad News Bears [2005] 3 star

There was something about this one right from the moment it was announced that instantly dulled the knee-jerk excitement at the prospect of Richard Linklater doing “another School of Rock” with Billy Bob Thornton fresh off Bad Santa to boot. It’s the kind of combination that really shouldn’t fail, even if you’re one of those people who believes that “all remakes are bad” – but there’s something about the whole thing that feels too much like stereotypical movie execs thinking, “hey, that Jack Black/kids rock flick did great! how can we do that again?”.

If anything, at times, this movie actually manages to be even more un-PC than those predecessors – which is great. It’s strange, though, that for me it just never comes close to the brilliance of School of Rock or the surprising warmth of Bad Santa (I haven’t seen the original Bad News Bears, I do hope it’s ever so slightly better than this). It did make me laugh out loud more than a few times, though, and at least it’s short. I guess considering it’s technically a sports movie, this probably means it’s some kind of masterpiece lol.
