Audition

Audition

Now this is nasty. It gets rarer and rarer that a movie makes me physically want to look away from the screen, but this one does it. But it’s definitely more than your average slasher movie. Personally, I can’t see myself watching it again, but it’ll defnitely stick in my mind. These are fairly messed up characters, and their various stories are presented in a totally messed up way, intercutting and jumpcutting to the point where you can’t tell whether a certain dream (or nightmare) is real or not.

I can’t quite see the reason behind this movie, but I’m certain there at least is one. To me it feels a lot like The Last House on the Left with genders reversed. There’s this real hollow sense of things “just happening,” and I think in fact one of the last lines of the movie is something along the lines of, “That’s life.” Very disturbing stuff. Have a rom-com to hand to watch before you go to bed after.

[...] As a matter of fact, this movie never quite turns into the nightmare it could have turned into. I kept waiting for it to turn into a sour, dark, violent nightmare … even something as awful as Audition maybe. But it’s more a comedy and a love story – and the cuddliest, cutest kind at that – than a thriller or a drama, though there are elements of those too. [...]
