I feel a little wrong reviewing this right now since on these viewing I wasn’t exactly paying much attention. But, that said, it’s very unlikely I’ll ever pay a lot of attention to this movie. I think I kind of get it. Like the other prequel, I do admire this movie a lot more now than I did the first time I saw it because of the way Episode III made the whole prequel project make so much more sense.
There are a couple of killer scenes (Yoda + lightsabre – what can go wrong? eg) in this movie and plenty of major duds (Anakin and Amidala almost literally roll in the hay, for heck’s sake – George, what were you thinking). It ends on such a major high, though – and it’s all down to John Williams’ score, which I would personally argue is the single major force behind the success of this whole series. His final cue here which covers the finale leading into a reprise of the Empire Strikes Back march and then into Anakin and Amidala’s theme, it gives me goosebumps every time. I’ve gotta mention the big R2D2 / C3P0 scene, too, when they’re in the droid factory – I personally think this is a comedy masterpiece and really a showcase for how much those characters mean to the series. I think this movie is really a lot better than they say – but yeh, I’ve gotta admit, it’s a little dodgy at times. It’s certainly no worse than the other movies in the series.
