When one of the better IMDb reviews of a movie contains the line, “Only after you watched it, you realize how cheap ‘An American Haunting’ actually is,” you’ve got to start worrying a little, lol. Despite containing a handful of effective moments and a batch of solid performances, this is really nothing special. The director and cinematographer’s idea of scary seems to consist merely of spinning the camera round more maniacally than Kenneth Branagh and draining the colour out of the image willy-nilly. The modern-day framing device made no sense at all to me, definitely feels tagged on to me, but why, I haven’t a clue.
