Amityville 3-D
(Obviously not watched in 3-D)
There’s not much to say about this, but in the realm of horror movies that’s frequently not a bad thing. It’s perfectly watchable, solidly produced, and fits the franchise (okay, I’ve actually only seen the first installment – I felt comfortable skipping part II for now since, I gather, it’s a prequel … can’t wait to see it, though). Unlike a lot of 3-D horror movies I’ve watched in 2-D (Freddy’s Dead, Friday 13th 3, etc), or indeed any old movie made for the red and green glasses, this one surprisingly isn’t obvious about how the effect is employed. Sure, you can tell in the explosive finale when people are being hurled at the camera (not exaggerating) ... but it definitely works better in plain 2-D than other attempts; having said that, I have to be a little confusing and add, this is perhaps the only 3-D movie I’ve seen so far that I think I’d love to see on the big screen as intended … as well as it works in 2-D, I have a feeling the 3-D stuff would add a lot.
Wow, did I really write that much about the movie? To be honest, when I woke up this morning (I watched it last night), I could barely remember it, lol. The fact that it stars Meg Ryan and has a score by Howard Blake (The Snowman) add some interest I guess.
