Altered States
Shame on me for putting off watching this until I found out Drew Barrymore has a blink and you’ll miss it appearance – her first – in it, lol. Well the first thing I noticed about this one is how slick it is for a Ken Russell movie. It really is quite restrained compared to most of his movies – except, of course, where it needs to be otherwise.
It is definitely a must-see (despite how long it’s taken me, lol), and in places certainly among the scariest things I’ve seen. William Hurt is at his best as far as I’m concerned, it’s hard to believe this was his first movie also, and Blair Brown provides excellent support, reminding me very much of Julianne Moore, not just in appearance but mannerisms too – I notice a few recent IMDb messageboarders thought the same – if the remake ever gets underway, to not cast Moore would be criminal. John Corigliano’s score is wonderful, too.
Oh yes, and for the record – the stupid reason for finally watching it wasn’t wasted … Drew is too cute lol.

“Altered States” is one of Ken’s best. And AS or Hammer’s “Five Million Years to Earth/Quatermass and the Pit” take the top spot in my “Top Ten Science Fiction Films”.
Speaking of Drew, isn’t she in TWO scenes, one indoors, one outdoors?
