I was genuinely surprised by this one. I’m a huge hater of all things Ant & Dec, I don’t think they should’ve ever progressed beyond “Byker Grove”, so from the start, this was one of those movies that makes me regret the fact that when it comes to cinema, I’ll really watch anything, lol. But here, though I can’t praise their acting or anything since they don’t really have that much to do, they nevertheless service the script more than adequately and there’s nary a glimpse of their Saturday night hosting personalities. The fact that when they share the screen with actors like Bill Pullman and Harry Dean Stanton it never seems as jarring as I would’ve previously thought is a small wonder on its own. It’s far from being a masterpiece – but as far as British movies of this type go, it’s actually kind of stunning in its own way, and it’d be wrong not to see it as a minor glimmer of hope.
