I haven’t seen the original Michael Caine Alfie but I’m imagining it’s quite different from the Jude Law remake. It’s essentially the male Bridget Jones’ Diary, only the appeal still seems to be more directed at women (in the typical sense… anyone who knows me will know how much I hate generalisations like that, but the way Alfie is pretty much presented as the “typical male” and all the usual things that accompany that sort of annoyed me just as much).

Jude Law is great in places, and the new Rolling Stones songs will certainly be featured at the Oscars (additional note: I just realised a few minutes after writing this that I had “Old Habits Die Hard” in my head even though I’ve only heard it once, nearly a week ago, when I saw this… that’s how good the songs are…). I’m pretty sure when I get round to seeing the Michael Caine version I will like the remake more: but I don’t think either will ever be making my greatest movies lists.
