A Scanner Darkly

Noooo idea what to write about this movie beyond that I liked it and that repeat viewings are definitely on the cards. On the one hand it’s actually more accessible and lighter than I expected (the Richard Linklater of “Slacker” and “Dazed and Confused” can definitely be felt as much as that of “Waking Life” and the “Before” movies that I expected more), but on the other, it does require one’s entire attention. I’ve never read Philip K. Dick and I’m told this is probably why I’ve never had a problem with any of the adaptations of his work, with the possible exception of Blade Runner, which ironically is the one Dick fans seem to think best captured his whole style or whatever (until this came along, at least). I liked this more than Blade Runner (but I’m quick to add that it’s ages since I last saw it, like, a whole other me ago) and was surprised by how, well … un-sci-fi-y it turned out to be. The feeling I was left with was more like that I get from some David Cronenberg movies, like eXistenZ or Crash, like I’ve glimpsed something I shouldn’t have and like I’ve really experienced something quite altering and yet I know it’s gonna be a long time, if ever, till I know what it was (not put well, I’m sure, but y’know, that’s the point, this feeling just can’t be explained, you need heavy rolls of celluloid to do it!). I have a feeling this, like those Cronenberg movies, and like Linklater’s own “Waking Life”, will grow on me not only with the literal repeat viewings, but also just by the more I think about it as the days and weeks and months go by.
