A Guy Thing
lol, that’s strange. I went to update what I thought was an existing review for this movie but couldn’t find it. I logged into Textpattern and found the draft which follows. I have no idea why it was never published, or, if it was, why I took it offline
Makes interesting reading though lol.
Anyway, I love this just as much now as ever, I love the incidental characters from Stiles and Blair’s whacky Aunt to the tiniest role of the guy in the underwear store (and the old lady who answers, “Bullsh*t!” to the line, “It’s a guy thing,” lol).
7th July, 2004:
The rental company keeps recommending me romantic comedies (which I readily add to my list because I’ll watch anything I’ve never seen before) and it’s becoming something of a problem because they keep turning out to be rather good, so I rate them highly so they recommend even more.
This movie I will forever remember as the one that made me finally quit denying it and realise my love for Julia Stiles. I mean, this is scary, head-over-heels psycho love like I had for Christina Ricci. I just can’t hide it any longer. She’s just perfect. Perfect. It took me right till the last scene of the movie to let down my guard but finally I could not stand it any longer, the world must know: Julia Stiles is perfect.
There’s a lot of piss-funny scenes in this movie, not a lot that’s not in the usual romantic-comedies but it’s all made infinitely better by the casting of Jason Lee and, of course, Julia. In the first scene you’ll maybe find yourself, like I did, thinking, “CLICHÉ!!” But y’know, stick with it, it does have a different vibe to it, a really strong message about living life without fear and stuff, and some scenes of insane enjoyment. Plus hash gravy and a fantastic drunk auntie.
I loved this movie. And I still hate romantic comedies (for now… I’m at the mercy of these damn recommendations …). Speaks for itself, I think.
And I’m now more tempted than ever to go back to London to see Julia Stiles in “Oleanna”... she’s a goddess, I must find computer wallpaper to celebrate my obsession.

Yikes. I’m a huge romantic comedy fan and I didn’t find anything romantic or comedic about A Guy Thing. It would definitely be in my top 50 worst movies list. To each their own, I guess.
