A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
“Sir! You’re in need of a soothsayer!”
“How do you know?”
“Well I’d be a fine soothsayer if I didn’t!”
Though a huge fan of Stephen Sondheim, I’ve never had much interest in even the idea of this show – “Comedy Tonight” is a great song, but till now it’s the only one that was ever in my mind. This movie version, though, is a hell of a lot of fun. It would almost be enjoyable even without the Sondheim songs. Michael Crawford is very much in Frank Spencer mode which was the most pleasant surprise and highlight for me, and director Richard Lester is in the surreal place I like best. I’ll watch this again in a heartbeat and I might finally be in the mood to watch it on stage, where I hope it’s true what they say that it’s even better there.
