Apart from the ending, which wasn’t quite as satisfying as I thought it would be considering the rest of the movie, this is a brilliant horror movie. Since the credits rolled, I’ve had time to think about that ending and read some people’s interpretations of it on the internet, and I sort of can’t wait to see the movie again because I think I’ll be more accepting of the ending.
The story here isn’t particularly groundbreaking, it’s just a collection of superstitions and concepts. But the execution of it all is easily up there with the great horror movies. True, maybe it’s because the director so often pays homage to these classics; but I’ve still not felt as much tension and, yes, fear, in a movie in many years. It’s well acted, very well written, and in pretty much everyway better than I expected. I do still think I’d prefer the movie to go out with a bang rather than an, “eh?” though.
